WEEK 4 S2: Concept Perspectives

Updated: Feb 28, 2019

This week I decided to take a step back from the site and consider the activities that would happen within the space. To begin this task I first considered the activities that I would like to consider within the proposed building within three categories:

  • Repairing old cars (refit cars with electric engines, deconstruct car parts & components)

  • Hi-tech (Disassemble components for PCs etc, disassemble components for phones & cameras)

  • Low-tech (wooden tables, chairs, bookshelves, beds etc.)

I expounded these categories by considering what is hi-tech and what is low-tech.

Low Tech

Technology designed to be as simple as possible. They are cheaper, easier to deploy, practical and modifiable. This could includes activities such as:

  • Weaving

  • Wood work / carpentry

  • Glass blowing

  • Blacksmith / metal crafts

  • Textiles / Sewing / Knitting

These spaces would require little or no machinery, but would need plenty of storage for items and tools, with good accessibility and lighting.

Hi-Tech

New technology with advanced featured. They have advanced capabilities, but are more complex to modify. This includes items such as:

  • Computers

  • Laptops

  • Cars

  • Washing Machines

  • Dishwashers

  • TVs

  • DVD players

These spaces would have a high dependence on machinery.
