WEEK 11 S2: Current Design Stage & Crit / Presentation

Transferring the principles from the design methodology, I have now constructed a model for the workshop building. Although currently displayed without openings, it gives an idea of the structure and the massing of the project. The diagram below illustrates how the conveyor belt system (highlighted in blue) would be interwoven through the roof structure, to transport items between the cemetery of consumerism and the workshop spaces:

Below is a diagram showing the zoning of the different areas. Green is the parks / greenery spaces. Red are the spaces for interaction, and orange are the workshop spaces in the building:

This diagram illustrates the spaces on the second floor (orange) and the spaces without a fill are the ground floor spaces:

I also created some collages of how I would intend the internal spaces to feel:

This is what the current proposal looks like in context. I will create a 'shopfront' entrance which displays all of the fixed items, almost as a celebration of the refurbished items. In contrast, there will also be a scrapyard space, where items are purposefully shown before they are sorted. This will create a sense of intrigue but also awe at seeing the extremity in excess of items that are thrown away and under / unutilised. The image below is not necessarily how I would intend the facades and materials to look, but is indicative of the form:

Here is a PDF of the crit presentation that I did for last Tuesday, in which I gave context to the project before leading up to the latest stages of design. Upon reflection from the crit, I would like to address these issues:

  • The Sense of Urgency - I need to mention the social breakdown that is happening between people, but also the relationship between ourselves and objects is broken. This should be spoken, as well as illustrated in some form, especially when it comes to the final presentation / portfolio. This also includes mentioning Barton Park, but then realising that this is a big issue that needs scaling up.

  • Site Plan Proposal - I need to develop a site plan proposal that engages with the full site and proposes a new way of interacting with the local context.

  • Scrapyard - As mentioned, I will explore the idea of a 'mound of junk' to emphasise the urgency.

  • Green spaces within the building - The greenery shouldn't just be a think on the perimeter, but should be integrated into the building.

  • The Story of a Washing Machine - Using the narrative of a broken washing machine to explain the project and the whole process.
