WEEK 6: Thoughts on the Shared Economy

Updated: Oct 30, 2018

I have recently been reflecting on the relevance of the sharing economy, and whether its principles are truly universal and inclusive, whilst also considering whether it is appropriate in all context, specifically with questioning whether it may be more applicable in a Western context than other cultures.

Is the sharing economy attempting to fill a void in our society?

It can be argued that the sharing economy is a reaction to hyper consumerism and over consumption. An excess of goods and services has created a viable opportunity for this new technology-driven economy. But, if we didn't have these issues in the first place, would we still be here?

When I consider Zambia, my country of birth, I think about the community aspect and the natural forms of sharing. Homes are open for people to pop by, and neighbours are familiar. The family is not just the nuclear, but those who are so far removed there aren't even titles for them (eg. Your grandmother's cousin's son's family are still close relatives) Where wisdom and life lessons are shared. Where resources are shared with those in need.

The sharing economy also raises questions on identity. Do we see ourselves as over consumers? (Note: commentators have been saying that hyper consumerism has ended and that we are at the beginning of a new age) Am I willing to share? Do I attach self-worth to what I own? Am I willing to always share, or only to a certain point? Do I reflect on my actions, their impact and what the future consequences of them may be?
