We are buying into the culture of excess. The average amount of space within dwellings has been increasing, and we accumulate excessive amounts of stuff during the time of inhabiting these spaces which do not get utilised. At the same time, we have grown further from the concept of community as we live more individualistic lifestyles and don’t even know our neighbour’s names.
ShareHouses are the central points for neighborhoods (approximately 50 dwellings). Each household has an important say in how the space is run, organised and managed, with 6 households carefully selected to ensure continuity of the ShareHouse ethos. From initial design and planning to in use, ShareHouses are self-build structures which encourage community participation at all stages.
ShareHouse is for sharing & learning
Each item in a home should be utilised, and if it is not, it will be in the ShareHouse. Neighbours can exchange, share, borrow and lend items that they would not be using but are willing for others to have access to them. Each item has a story, and the storage spaces will be interactive to engage with those visiting the space. ShareHouses provides storage and exchange spaces.
ShareHouse is for interacting & playing
Meet neighbours within the cafe spaces, relax and get a change of scenery from your home within your neighbourhood, exchange ideas, learn and talk about what’s going on in the local area. Children have a space where they can share toys, and play with others whilst being in close proximity of their parents. ShareHouse provides seating spaces and facilities for conversation and play.
ShareHouse is for creating & repairing
Neglected items can be re-used in creative ways and neighbours can also gather to create items that they might not normally do, such as making new items of clothing, cards etc. ShareHouse will also provide spaces for people to fix and repair items. As most households will have DIY items that they would not use regularly, ShareHouse can be a centre for storing such items.
ShareHouses are increasing the circular economy, and decreasing the waste economy. They are combating individualism and promoting community.
DESIGN
The design of the ShareHouse will be a timber construction, with timber poles used as columns to support the load of the roof. The plan of the structure will be free from load bearing internal walls to allow adaptation for the space by the community at later times. It will be open plan and free flowing, as to not restrict people to utilise only certain parts of the building.
